What is public housing?

Public housing provides affordable, decent and safe housing for eligible families, seniors, and people with disabilities, depending on their income. Local housing authorities get aid from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide low-rent housing.

Who qualifies for public housing?

Public housing is only for low-income families and individuals. To be eligible, the housing authority looks at: 

• Your annual gross income (income limits depend on where you want to live and your family size)
• If you qualify as a family, a senior, or a person with a disability
• Your U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status
